CNC Punching
Once our engineering team has established the flat layout of the enclosure, chassis or other metal part that will ultimately produce your exact part matching your detailed drawing, the punch team makes sure that this flat layout gets produced from high-quality metal accurately, efficiently, and in a very repeatable manner.
Reduce Waste with CNC Punching
Our four turret punch presses are some of the most fascinating pieces of equipment to watch. They can punch as many as 500 holes per minute as the workpiece moves about the table at 3,200 IPM; All the while holding tolerances of +/- 0.002”. The programs written by Service Metal engineers primarily direct these powerful machines. We also utilize vertical CNC milling machines and laser options when standard punch press tooling does not effectively address part geometries. Punch presses tables move around on an X-Y axis centering the workpiece under the ram. The programmers instructions tell the operator which tools to load into the turret, and then the program calls out which tool set is to be located underneath the 30-ton ram.
Cost-effective CNC Punching Solutions
CNC punching is a highly flexible process. Not only does it prove far more economical for small and medium volume jobs, it scales effectively to compete against the high, fixed-cost options, such as metal stamping and plastic injection molds, with volumes in the tens to hundreds of thousands. Our extensive catalog of standard tooling accommodates the vast majority of part geometries. There’s no need to invest hundreds of thousands of your capital into custom tool and die sets for either stamping or injection molds before even producing one metal part! Your product will come to life not only with less investment, but considerably faster. Looking to accelerate speed-to-market? Molds and stamp tooling routinely require 8-12 weeks to ready for production. Your part will take shape just as well using standard tooling in our speedy but flexible punch press machines. Service Metal can be producing your parts within one week of ordering when timing is critical.
Need For Flexibility As Electronic Component Shortages Abound
Production Engineers are bombarded with complexity in an environment of uncertain component supply. A previously standard module or PCB turns scarce in an instant, or requires 16 weeks lead time versus an in-stock status mere days ago. If your metal chassis and enclosures are ‘hardwired’ to mount specific components that suddenly become scarce, it’s easy to get stuck with production shortfalls and massive delays.
Sure, electrical engineers have identified substitute components, but their attachment points for mounting don’t match your metal design. This places the cart before the horse, from our perspective. Metal should follow the functionary components of your great product, not dictate your design options. A good way to paint yourself into a corner like this might be to invest eight weeks and $275,000 in expensive hard-wired tooling.
Let Service Metal’s flexible, domestic and low-cost manufacturing options help you sleep better at night. Within hours, we can change placements of stand-offs, for example, or change location and dimensions of baffles, cutouts, and contours allowing substitute components to properly mate and keep your production line rolling.
